Which Caribbean Island Is Your Perfect Match?

Too many islands, not enough clarity? We break down the character of each so choosing feels easy.

The words ‘romantic’ and ‘Caribbean’ go hand-in-hand.

Dotted across warm, crystal-clear seas, these bejewelled islands offer glorious, palm-fringed beaches, waters teeming with colour, mountains carpeted in lush, green rain forests and a huge helping of history, nature, relaxation and adventure in equal measure.

Couples looking for romance can find it here by the bucketload: expansive villas with private pools, dinner for two on the soft sands, serene spas and as many (or as little) activities as you could wish for.

However, while these ingredients are common to most, not all the islands are created equally. Each one has its own distinct characteristics; its own culture and selling points.

To help you decide which island is the best match for you, join me as I take a tour of the Caribbean’s most treasured gems — each offering its own irresistible blend of beauty, charm and romance for couples looking to unwind, reconnect and fall in love with island life.

I have thrown in a romantic hotel option on each island to entice you too – but I have got a whole host of gorgeous boltholes up my sleeves.

And, if you can’t make up your mind as to which island to visit, then read to the end where I have got a solution that offers you the perfect Caribbean combination.

Ready to go?

Jamaica: Rhythm, romance & reggae

Jamaica has an energy all of its own – vibrant and soulful.

This is the island of reggae music, spicy jerk flavours and legendary sunsets. You will find the perfect balance here: lazy beach days in Negril, adventurous hikes through Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios and buzzing nightlife in Montego Bay.

Spend a morning drifting down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft, guided by a local who’ll serenade you with island songs. Then, dive into Blue Hole’s turquoise waters – a hidden swimming spot tucked into the lush forest.

Foodies will fall in love with roadside jerk shacks and beachside lobster grills, while couples chasing romance can sip cocktails at famous Rick’s Café as daredevil cliff divers leap into the sea.

Romantic stay: Sandals South Coast
On the quiet south coast sits this ultra-all-inclusive resort. Its biggest boast are its over-the-water, butler-serviced bungalows – all strategically placed so that together they form a glorious heart shape hovering above the turquoise waters. Alternatively, check into one of the resort’s quirky conical-shaped rondoval villas set around a ‘river pool’ that come with their own private pools. It’s indulgence with a laid-back Jamaican twist, making it one of the island’s top honeymoon retreats.

St Lucia: The Caribbean’s romance capital

Few islands are as instantly recognisable as St Lucia, with the dramatic Pitons rising from the sea. This volcanic island is lush and mountainous, with rainforests to hike, waterfalls to bathe under and sulphur springs where you can slather each other in healing mud.

For couples, the magic lies in variety. Snorkel in the coral reefs off Anse Chastanet, explore Marigot Bay’s picture-perfect harbour or take a boat trip to hidden coves.

Chocolate lovers can even tour cocoa plantations and create their own bar at Hotel Chocolat’s famous estate.

And when the sun begins to dip, nothing beats a champagne cruise with the Pitons silhouetted against a glowing sky.

Romantic stay: Jade Mountain Resort
This legendary hideaway redefines romance. Its “sanctuaries” have no fourth wall, meaning your private infinity pool opens directly onto views of the Pitons and the sea. Guests staying here can also tap into the sister property, Anse Chastanet hotel, located nearby.

Barbados: Chic island living

Barbados is an island with many personalities, and that’s exactly why it’s so loved by couples.

To the west you’ll find the ‘Platinum Coast’, so called thanks to its upmarket, swanky resorts (and their celebrity guests). The south coast is lively and sociable, while the rugged east is wild and windswept – perfect for romantic drives and photo stops.

Couples have a veritable pic-’n-mix of activities to enjoy: swim with turtles in Carlisle Bay; explore the underground crystal chambers of Harrison’s Cave, or take a catamaran cruise complete with snorkelling stops and rum punch.

At night, join locals at Oistins Fish Fry – a Friday-night tradition of fresh-grilled seafood, dancing and music under the stars.

Food and drink are part of the island’s heartbeat: sip Mount Gay rum at the world’s oldest distillery or dine at The Cliff – one of the Caribbean’s most famous restaurants, perched dramatically over the ocean.

Romantic Stay: The House
An intimate, adults-only boutique resort offering unlimited champagne breakfasts, afternoon tea, pre-dinner canapés and beachside massages. With just 34 rooms and suites on the west coast, it feels like a (very elegant) private home. The Taste of Elegance Dine Around programme also means you can dine at selected sister properties for no extra cost.

Grenada: The Spice Island

Grenada is known as the ‘Spice Island’ for its nutmeg, cinnamon and clove plantations, but it’s equally famous for being unspoilt and romantic.

Its most famous stretch is Grand Anse Beach, a powdery white crescent lined with palms and calm turquoise water. Unlike some larger islands, Grenada feels small, welcoming and authentic.

Couples can wander through St George’s, the island’s capital and a colourful harbour town oozing colonial charm. Alternatively, hunt out the gloriously cascading waterfalls that decorate the island: the Concorde Falls, Seven Sisters Falls and Royal Mount Carmel Waterfalls being among the popular options.

Notable beaches include the two-mile stretch of soft powdery sand that is Grand Anse Beach. Equally magical is Magazine Beach and Mourne Rouge Beach.

Head to Levera Beach National Park to spy baby leatherback turtles scamper from the sand to the sea or venture into the waters around the island for some spectacular scuba diving.

Beneath the surface you’ll discover an abundance of colourful sea life alongside a rather unusual underwater attraction in the form of the Molinière Underwater Sculpture Park.

The food scene is another highlight, with beachfront seafood grills, chocolate estates and rum punches that do indeed ‘pack a punch’.

Romantic stay: Spice Island Beach Resort
An all-inclusive boutique escape on Grand Anse Beach. Its beachfront suites come with private pools and the personalised service makes every couple feel like honoured guests. Complimentary watersports, including the use of Hobie Cats, sea kayaks and snorkelling gear, means there is plenty of chance to explore the Caribbean coastline at your own leisure.

The Bahamas – Powdery beaches & island-hopping bliss

The Bahamas is a huge playground of more than 700 islands and cays just off the coast of Florida. Head to Grand Bahama and New Providence for all the nightlife and action, or escape to the smaller islands or cays (deserted sandy islets) for more intimate, private experiences.

You’ll find the Bahamian capital of Nassau on New Providence, renown for its nightlife, casinos, excellent shopping and big, hotel resorts.

But the joy of the Bahamas can be found in the sheer variety of options open to you when you venture to the other islands – often requiring you to hop on a boat or take off in a seaplane.

On the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay, you’ll be sharing the waters with swimming and paddling pigs (yes really). Harbour Island, is renowned for its salmon-coloured sands and pastel cottages. Dive below the surface, and you’ll discover sunken shipwrecks, colourful reefs and there’s a chance you might see migrating sharks.

Romantic stay: The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort
An opulent resort on Paradise Island, surrounded by tropical gardens and exuding that air of grand colonial heritage. As expected from Four Seasons, the service is second-to-none here.  Expect imaginative, decadent dishes from the restaurant kitchen and vintage wines from the bar. Facilities are extensive, including fitness classes, tennis, yoga, spa treatments and golf at 18-hole Ocean Club Golf Course.

St Vincent & the Grenadines – Yachts, cays & authentic island life

If you crave charisma and seclusion, then these relatively unknown Windward Islands could be your ideal choice. Volcanic St Vincent is dramatic and green, while the Grenadines (Bequia, Canouan, Mustique and Tobago Cays) are postcard-perfect sailing country.

What sets the chain apart is the classic yacht-culture and the sheltered turquoise lagoons of the Tobago Cays, ideal territory for snorkelling with turtles atop coral gardens.

Bequia has a relaxed, bohemian vibe with friendly bars and boatyards; Mustique is private and glamorous (think celebrity villas), while Canouan mixes small-scale luxury with tranquil beaches.

For slow romance, why not rent a private catamaran for a day of island-hopping and anchor at deserted beaches for a lobster lunch?

St Vincent is the largest of the islands in the archipelago.

Here nature abounds and can best be seen if you get out there and immerse yourself in it – a trek through the Buccament Valley keeping an eye out for parrots; a dive into the pools of St Vincent’s twin Dark View Falls; a stroll through the tropical delights of Montreal Gardens or a guided hike up La Soufrière – the island’s active volcano. It last erupted in 2021 and stands supreme within St Vincent’s carpet of rainforest and craggy hills.

Romantic stay: Young Island Resort
A tiny exclusive hideaway on its own private island reached by boat from St Vincent’s southern shore. Within the 13 acres of tropical palms and sweet-smelling jasmine, you’ll find your delightful rustic cottage complete with all the privacy (yet all the attention) you could wish for.

Antigua – 365 beaches, sailing and colonial charm

Antigua’s boast – “a beach for every day of the year” – isn’t just a line, it’s an invitation.

The island’s stunning variety means honeymooners can spend a morning at a sheltered bay like Dickenson Bay and an afternoon exploring wild east-coast surf beaches.

English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard add a heavy dose of history and natural beauty: restored Georgian buildings, classic yachts and bars that spill into perfect sunset vistas.

Shirley Heights is the island’s legendary viewpoint and home to the weekly Sunday party when a live steel pan band serenades the sun as it sets and grills cook up hot jerk delights.

Water-lovers will adore snorkelling at Cades Reef and sailing around nearby uninhabited coves is a must.

Inland, take a jeep tour, visit fig-trees and sugar-plantation ruins or try cliffside zipline adventures for a jolt of adrenaline.

Don’t miss out on a trip to English Harbour where you’ll find the World Heritage-listed Nelson’s Dockyard and a waterfront lined with super yachts. The adjacent national park also has over 11 miles of trails if you’ve got energy to burn.

The ramshackle capital of St John’s is worth a visit. It’s liveliest on a Friday and Saturday, when the market is in full force with a jumble of stalls selling tropical fruit and veg.

But if you’re looking for boutique privacy and barefoot dining, the island serves romance and understated glamour in equal measure.

Romantic stay: Hermitage Bay
Secluded hillside suites with plunge pools and candlelit dinners by the sea are on offer at this intimate hotel set amongst 10 acres of tropical gardens. Much of the cuisine served at Hermitage Bay’s restaurant is sourced from its own organic kitchen garden.

Dominican Republic – Beaches, history and natural playgrounds

The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean’s most varied islands: Punta Cana and La Romana on the east of the island serve up large all-inclusive resorts and long white-sand beaches, while the south and west – think Samaná and Puerto Plata – are dominated by nature, offering whale watching, jungle river excursions, a medley of waterfalls and a rich history of colonial culture.

Saona Island (a day trip from Punta Cana or Bayahibe) is an absolute highlight – a white-sand island with shallow, turquoise waters where catamarans anchor for swimming and a beach BBQ.

For history and cobblestone charm, the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo features 16th-century cathedrals, plazas and cafes – a tactile reminder that this was the New World's first European city.

Meanwhile, couples keen for adventure can hit the canyons, hurtle down ziplines or take 4x4 mountain tours into the mountains.

For a wet and wild experience, hunt down the Damajagua Falls near Puerto Plata, a host of 27 waterfalls, natural waterslides, and opportunities for some dare devil cliff jumping.

Romantic stay: Riu Palace Macao
This adults-only, beachfront haven, comes with five restaurants, seven bars, a triple helping of pools, a glorious spa and all manner of watersports. Couples may want to upgrade to the Elite Club by RIU rooms, which come with extras like an exclusive beach area and an upgraded minibar.

Aruba – Arid beauty, sunshine & Dutch flavours

Want year-round sunshine? Then Aruba should be a strong honeymoon contender. What’s more, the island lies beneath the hurricane belt making it unlikely to be affected by tropical storms and hurricanes. So weather wise, Aruba is a big tick.

Add to that long powdery beaches and you have a match made in heaven. Palm Beach, as the name suggests, is filled with swaying palm trees, while Eagle Beach boasts wide sweeps of soft white sand dotted with beautiful Divi Divi trees.

As you’d expect, watersports abound: kiteboarding, windsurfing and world-class wreck diving are huge draws - including a plane wreck. Venturing out to sea on a catamaran tour is a dreamy way to glide from one site to another.

Beyond the coast, Aruba displays some unusual landscapes, no less so than Arikok National Park. This rugged, desert-like landscape is filled with craggy cliffs and giant cacti where you can hike, visit caves, swim in natural pools or take a jeep tour.

Also be sure to venture into the capital city of Oranjestad. Here you’ll find a bustling harbour, brightly-coloured Dutch architecture, museums, monuments and a wide menu of culinary delights – a mix of Aruban, Dutch and Latin flavours.

Dishes go beautifully when accompanied with the island’s signature cocktail, the Aruba Ariba (vodka, local Aruban rum, fruit juices, Crème de Banana and Grand Marnier). Cheers!

Romantic stay: Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort
This adults-only, eco-conscious hotel is right on Eagle Beach. The pace is slow here: think full moon yoga, beach Pilates, nature walks, tai chi, making your own Aloe scrub and mindfulness beach walks. Bliss.

Cuba – Vintage cars, salsa nights & art

Cuba is a breath of retro romance: classic American cars rolling through Havana’s Malecón; smoky, live-music clubs where salsa and son (Afro-Cuban music) pulse long into the night; and pastel-coloured colonial towns like Trinidad with its cobbled streets and brightly painted houses.

What makes Cuba unique is that history is lived in the streets – forts, plazas and museums tell the island’s layered story, and music and dance are part of daily life.

For beach time, Varadero has long stretches of white sand and full-resort options. And for culture, Havana’s Viejo (Old Havana) is heaving with plazas, the famous Hotel Nacional (the site of significant historic moments that shaped the island’s tumultuous past), and its dramatic 16th century Castillo del Morro.

While in Havana, why not have a private dance lesson or arrange for a photo shoot in a vintage, American car. Or how about a mojito-making cocktail class so you can conjure up holiday memories when you’re back home?

Romantic stay: Iberostar Grand Hotel Trinidad
This elegant, restored colonial property, is just a short walk from the heart of Trinidad, near the lively Parque Cespedes – so it’s perfect for history lovers. The 40 rooms all surround a central patio and are beautifully decorated. Taking centre stage is an impressive marble staircase. This hotel is for adults only.

Grand Cayman - Seven Mile Beach & underwater spectacles

Dramatic wall dives; the massive, Kittiwake warship wreck; bioluminescent bays and the famous Stingray City – so many of Grand Cayman’s attractions lie beneath the surface of the turquoise waters that surround the island.

Stingray City probably tops the tourist charts. It’s around this shallow sandbar where tame southern stingrays glide up to you, beckoning you to interact and feed them. It’s a truly unforgettable encounter.

Next up is a night kayak or boat trip to one of Grand Cayman’s bioluminescent bays. Prepare to see the water glow with the light of millions of tiny organisms providing a magical natural light show.

Divers are in for a treat. Grand Cayman’s North Wall plunges deeper than 1,800 metres. Or explore the numerous shipwrecks that sit on the sea bed around the island – some so close to the shore you can actually walk out to them from the beaches.

Talking of beaches. Grand Cayman’s most famous beach is Seven Mile Beach (it’s actually closer to six miles), a long crescent of soft sand fringed by premium resorts.

To escape to a much quieter beach, head to Rum Point in the north. Here you can clamber into a hammock and doze away the day gently swinging in the breeze.

Romantic stay: Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa
This trend setting, contemporary boutique hotel sits on Seven Mile Beach. Open-air architecture provides sea views at almost every turn. While meandering gardens, oceanfront rooms and spa rituals are perfect for slow, relaxed romantic days.

St Kitts & Nevis – history, volcanoes & sugar-ridge scenery

St Kitts and Nevis may go together like ‘love and marriage’, but these tiny sister islands have their distinct personalities.

St Kitts is lively and historic: the highlight is Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site where visitors can step back into the 17th century and enjoy panoramic views across the island.

The scenic St Kitts Scenic Railway is another must-do, winding through old sugar plantations with stunning coastal views. For nature lovers, a hike up Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano shrouded in rainforest, rewards hikers with breathtaking crater views.

And then there are the island’s beaches, ranging from the lively Frigate Bay to the quieter black sands of Dieppe Bay.

On the other hand, Nevis is smaller, quieter and brimming with charm. Pinney’s Beach is its star stretch of sand, perfect for swimming and sunset cocktails. The island also boasts the Botanical Gardens, colonial-era Charlestown and the Nevis Peak hike for adventurous souls.

Combining the two into one trip is easy. A short ferry ride takes you from one to the other. However, chartering a small boat for a day is an idyllic way to explore secluded coves.

Romantic stay: Four Seasons Resort Nevis
This luxurious resort is perfect for couples who want understated elegance and island serenity. Located on glorious Pinney’s Beach, the resort also boasts its own golf course, four restaurants, a spa and three pools.

Puerto Rico – Rainforest hikes, bioluminescent bays & Old San Juan nights

Puerto Rico blends urban culture and wild nature.

Head to Old San Juan (the oldest part of the capital city), where you’ll discover blue cobblestones, pastel houses and historic forts. It’s perfect for cinematic daytime wandering. At night the city pulses with music and excellent dining.

Nature lovers should make a beeline for El Yunque National Forest where they can hike through lush jungle, swim in waterfalls and take in sweeping mountain views.

Another natural highlight is found beneath the waves within Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays. Mosquito Bay in Vieques or Laguna Grande near Fajardo are the most rewarding. As you kayak across the surface, the water glows with every stroke of your paddle.

Puerto Rico has hundreds (some say, thousands) of beaches. Condado and Isla Verde are in San Juan and perfect if you want that ‘beach meets city’ vibe – lively, glamorous and filled with beach clubs, bars and jet ski rentals.

On the nearby island of Culebrita you’ll discover the Caribbean paradise of Tortuga Beach, where sea turtles munch on seagrass in the bay and coral reefs surround the island.

Alternatively, choose the quintessentially tropical Flamenco Beach, located on the island of Culebra – often rated one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Romantic stay: Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
This upscale, extravagant hotel classes itself as a ‘reserve’ rather than a ‘resort’ – a nod to the impeccable service it offers and its plantation history. All rooms offer indoor and outdoor rainforest showers and deep soaking tubs and the spa is utterly enormous, including two treehouse treatment rooms.

Turks & Caicos – Beaches and diving from the shore

If you’re dreaming of a honeymoon that feels like stepping into a screensaver, the Turks and Caicos Islands are spot on.

Most couples base themselves on Providenciales (Provo) – the main island with dreamy resorts, chic villas and that all-important mix of relaxation and adventure.

The star of the show is Grace Bay Beach. Imagine soft, powder-white sand and super-clear water – perfect for lazy strolls, sunset cocktails and the obligatory toes-in-the-sand selfies.

For adventure, diving here is next-level. The islands sit on one of the world’s largest coral reef systems, so you can expect colourful walls, swim-through caves and a parade of marine life.

Beginners can snorkel straight off the beach, while seasoned divers might spot turtles, eagle rays and even migrating humpbacks at the right time of year.

Beyond the water, you’ve got boat trips to secret cays, paddle-boarding in glass-calm lagoons or island-hopping to explore quieter spots like North and Middle Caicos.

Romantic stay: Amanyara
Nestled on the tip of a nature and wildlife reserve, with the Northwest Point Marine Park just offshore, this resort is all about barefoot luxury. Guests stay in secluded ‘pavilions’, made largely from glass and wood, with each pavilion nestled on the edge of tranquil 'ponds', or beside the ocean.

Plus: A Caribbean cruise – for a perfect island mix

Can’t decide which island to choose? Then how about visiting several in one glorious island-hopping trip? A cruise is a perfect solution. Settle into your luxurious floating hotel and glide from one Caribbean port to another.

Opt for an Eastern Caribbean itinerary and step ashore at the likes of St Thomas (USVI), San Juan (Puerto Rico), St Maarten and Tortola.

Alternatively, on a cruise of the western Caribbean, Cozumel (Mexico), Grand Cayman, Jamaica and Belize await.

In the southern Caribbean lie islands including Aruba, Curacao, Grenada, Barbados and St Lucia.

On each island you can book an excursion in advance, giving you a whole host of different experiences.

But that’s not all. A cruise might see you step ashore islands that are exclusively for cruise passengers only. These are private islands belonging to the cruise line.

For example, MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay in the Bahamas is a beautiful, unspoilt island where the emphasis is all on the environment and nature. Activities include diving, kayaking, paddle-boarding or climbing to the top of the landmark lighthouse. There’s also a marine research centre that gives an insight into the MSC Foundation’s conservation work.

Similarly, Holland America Line has taken a similar natural approach on its Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas. Nature tours, hiking and horse riding on the beach are a few activities on this unspoilt island.

Alternatively, more action awaits on Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay in the Bahamas. It’s home to Oasis Lagoon, the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool, the region’s biggest wave pool and Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest slide in North America.

And if you’re up for even more adrenaline-fuelled activities, try Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay, also in the Bahamas.

Here you’ll find zip lines, snorkelling among colourful reefs, and even an underwater sculpture garden with 23 striking pieces to discover.

You can rent private cabanas for a touch of luxury — and if you really want to take it up a notch, book a trip to the neighbouring Silver Cove lagoon, an exclusive retreat-within-an-island reserved for NCL guests.
